Surface water temperature in East Galveston Bay sat at 84 degrees for the week ending July 5, and clarity has stayed normal for this time of year. That combination has trout and redfish both playing along for anglers willing to move around and find where the bait is stacked.
Trout Working the Flats and Reefs
This week’s trips kept the focus on speckled trout over shell on the flats, along with open water reefs whenever the wind allowed it.
Active bait is the key. If there is no bait or visible signs of life in an area, it is not worth spending much time there right now.
Imitation shrimp lures and tails fished under popping corks, with a one to two foot leader, have been drawing the most bites. Deadly Dudley Rat Tails and WacAttack Flukes rigged on 1/8 ounce heads have also been producing.
Redfish in the Grass Lines and Back Lakes
Redfish have been holding tight to grass lines in a foot to 24 inches of water. Indentations, drains, and points along those grass lines have been the most consistent producers.
The back lakes have been the go to water for this pattern, with Fishbites paddle tails getting the job done.
