Where the Fish Are

With surface water temperatures sitting around 87°F, we’re spending a good amount of time working shell beds where active bait is holding. When the conditions line up, these areas have been producing good numbers of Speckled Trout and Sand Trout on most days.

Redfish are also keeping things interesting, particularly when fishing popping corks around active bait. The fish have been pulling hard and giving clients plenty of action on light tackle.

What’s Working

We’ve been putting Mirror Lure suspending hard baits, swimbaits and tails to work around the shell. For the soft plastics, 1/8-ounce jig heads paired with light-colored tails have been producing.

Popping corks continue to be a strong option. A 2-foot leader above Salt & Pepper Tails from WacAttack and Deadly Dudley Terror Tails in Blue Moon has been producing some excellent Redfish action.

If topwater is your game, don’t leave those walking baits at home. The topwater bite has remained good on our early-morning charters, making that pre-sunrise window a great opportunity to cover water and find an aggressive fish.

Species Spotlight

Speckled Trout: Look for Specks around shell beds with active bait in the area. Suspending hard baits, swimbaits and light-colored tails on 1/8-ounce heads are all producing when the conditions cooperate.

Sand Trout: Sand Trout are also showing up over the shell, giving anglers another target while working these productive areas.

Redfish: Popping corks with a 2-foot leader and the right soft plastic have been producing hard-pulling Redfish. Keep an eye on bait activity and stay ready when the fish move through.

Seasonal Tips & Timing

The summertime crowds have started to thin out, which makes this a good time to start thinking about a Fall or Winter trip. The fish are still biting, the early-morning topwater window is worth taking advantage of, and there’s more room to work once the summer rush fades.

For anglers who enjoy artificial-lure fishing, this is a great time to get on the water and put a few different presentations to work.
