Summer Trout Bite Heating Up at the Jetties

The summer pattern is in full swing with surface temperatures sitting at 86 degrees. Trout and redfish are still being found around structure in the Intracoastal, but the more consistent action has required putting in a few extra miles.

This past week we’ve burned plenty of fuel making the 40-minute run to the Galveston Jetties, where anglers have been rewarded with a solid speckled trout bite. The western reefs in East Galveston Bay have also been producing quality fish for those willing to make the trip.

Key Zones for Action

The Intracoastal continues to hold scattered trout and redfish around structure, especially where current is moving through. The best numbers of trout, however, have been coming from the Galveston Jetties and productive shell reefs along the western side of the bay.

Current flow has been a key factor, and staying mobile has made the difference between an average day and a memorable one.

What’s Working

Mirror Lure suspending hard baits have been producing well around deeper structure, while soft plastic swimbaits and light-colored tails rigged on 1/8-ounce jig heads continue to put fish in the boat.

Our clients are still having outstanding success fishing Fish Smack Popping Corks with a 1- to 2-foot leader over shrimp imitation lures. Salt & Pepper tails from WacAttack and Deadly Dudley have also remained dependable producers throughout the week.

The topwater bite continues to shine during the first and last hours of daylight. If you enjoy throwing walking baits, now is one of the best times of the summer to capitalize on aggressive feeding trout before the heat of the day slows things down.

Species Spotlight

Speckled trout have been the headline this week, with the most consistent action coming from the jetties and western bay reefs. Redfish are still available around Intracoastal structure, although anglers have had to work a little harder to find quality schools.

Seasonal Tips & Timing

With water temperatures climbing into the mid-80s, focus your efforts during the early morning and late afternoon whenever possible. Fish are feeding more aggressively during these lower-light periods, making topwater presentations especially effective before the summer sun gets high.
