The past week brought another strong north wind and cold front through the upper coast, pushing water temperatures down and pulling water levels way out of the bay system. 

These winter conditions scattered clarity from clean to off-colored depending on location, but the fish are still there if you slow it down and fish with intention.

Morning trips lined up best with falling tides, and that’s when we connected with solid redfish, including a few oversize fish mixed in. Low water has concentrated fish, and those willing to grind it out on the bottom were rewarded.

Key Zones for Action

Deeper shell and mud held the most consistent bite, especially in areas adjacent to drains. With water levels pushed out, those deeper pockets became prime ambush points.

Redfish also continued to show in very shallow marsh areas, particularly around drains where water movement was present even on colder mornings.

What’s Working

Fishing right on the bottom has been the ticket. Super-slow presentations with various jig head sizes paired with Salt & Pepper WACky Shad XL tails from Wac Attack produced the most bites.

Patience mattered this week. The fish aren’t feeding often, but when they do, they commit. 

Watching major and minor fish times made a noticeable difference, as that’s when the bite really turned on for us.

In the marsh and skinny water, imitation shrimp and soft plastics under popping corks with a one-foot leader triggered reaction bites. 

Weightless FishBites paddle tails worked well over the shallowest flats when fish were cruising.

Species Spotlight

Redfish have been the most reliable species, holding tight to drains and shallow marsh edges. Oversized fish are very much in play this time of year, especially with fewer boats on the water.

Seasonal Tips & Timing

Winter fishing is all about confidence and execution. Fish areas you trust, slow everything down, and don’t rush a spot. 

This time of year consistently offers some of the best opportunities for bigger fish, with less pressure and more predictable positioning.

Cold water doesn’t mean no bite—it just means the right bite windows matter more than ever.
