Trout Bite Staying Consistent | Clear Water in East Galveston Bay

Location: East Galveston Bay – Crystal Beach, TX
The past week around Crystal Beach fishing grounds brought excellent water clarity across East Galveston Bay, with cooler early mornings and fog settling over the water most days. Visibility has been limited at launch, but once the sun starts lifting the fog the conditions have been ideal for working artificials across reefs and marsh drains.
With water temps sitting around 68 degrees, fish are starting to spread across classic spring transition areas. Bait activity has been steady, and the cleaner water has made it easier to work lures naturally along shell and mud bottoms.
Key Zones for Action
Most of our speckled trout have been coming off scattered oyster reefs and nearby structure in the open bay.
Working the edges of shell in about 3–4 feet of water has been the most consistent pattern. Trout have been holding where subtle depth changes meet scattered shell.
Redfish have been pushing shallow in the marsh systems. Drains and nearby mud bottoms with shell beds have been producing steady bites, especially where water movement is pulling bait through.
Super shallow flats near these drains have also been holding fish cruising over soft mud with scattered shell.
What’s Working
For trout, we’ve been throwing Glacier White / Chartreuse paddle tails on 1/8 oz jig heads with a steady retrieve along shell structure.
Suspending hard jerkbaits in pink and chrome have also produced several quality fish when worked slowly through deeper pockets around reefs.
For redfish, imitation shrimp lures and soft tails under popping corks have been effective. We’re running leaders around 12–18 inches to keep the presentation tight in the strike zone.
Weightless Deadly Dudley Rat Tails and WacAttack Flukes have also been producing bites when worked slowly across shallow mud bottoms and around marsh drains.
Species Spotlight
Speckled trout have been the most consistent bite this week with solid action over oyster structure.
Redfish have been steady but more location-specific, mostly concentrated around drains and shallow marsh areas where bait is moving with the tide.
These fish are still feeding aggressively when the conditions line up.
Seasonal Tips & Timing
This time of year around Crystal Beach can offer some of the best opportunities for quality fish.
Fishing pressure is still light compared to the warmer months, and bigger trout and redfish tend to stay active in these cooler water conditions.
Early morning fog has been common, so patience at the launch and safe navigation are important until visibility improves.
For anglers willing to put in the time, the rewards can be some of the best fish of the season.
