The past week brought another round of winter fronts and the super low water levels we expect this time of year across the bay system. 

Clear water and cooler temps have pushed fish into predictable winter patterns, rewarding anglers who slow down and fish with intention.

Morning trips have lined up well with falling tides, and that’s when we’ve connected with some solid fish, including a few oversize reds. 

Watching your timing has been critical, with the best action consistently lining up during Major and Minor Fish Times.

Key Zones for Action

Transition zones and drop-offs have been the most reliable producers, especially areas adjacent to shallow flats that drain into deeper water. These fish are not moving far, so working the edges patiently has been the key.

Redfish have also been holding tight to drains and way back in the marsh, often in extremely shallow water where they feel comfortable during these cold, clear conditions.

What’s Working

The most consistent setup has been a slow presentation with 1/4 oz jig heads paired with white or chartreuse paddle tails, crawled methodically along drop-offs.

Suspending hard baits from Mirrorlure have also been effective when worked slowly with long pauses, letting the bait hang in the strike zone.

In the shallow marsh, imitation shrimp and soft plastics under popping corks with a short 1-foot leader have triggered reaction bites. 

Over the skinniest water, weightless FishBite paddle tails have been deadly when eased across the surface.

Species Spotlight

Redfish remain the star of the show, with a steady bite despite the cold water. These winter conditions often bring fewer bites overall, but the quality of fish has been excellent, with bigger reds actively feeding.

Seasonal Tips & Timing

Winter fishing offers some of the best opportunities of the year for trophy-class fish and quiet days on the water. 

Low tides demand extra attention to navigation, especially on morning trips, as it’s easy to get yourself in a bind if you’re not careful.

Pay close attention to tide movement and fish activity windows, slow your presentation, and you’ll be rewarded.
