Conditions & Setup
A strong north wind and the latest cold front have pushed water levels down across the bay system, dropping temperatures and setting up classic winter fishing conditions in East Bay.
Morning trips this past week lined up with falling tides, and that window proved to be the most productive when the bite turned on.
Fish are still feeding, just not often, so slowing down and fishing with purpose has been critical. Confidence areas and disciplined presentations made all the difference.
Key Zones for Action
Speckled trout were holding tight to deeper shell mixed with mud, especially in areas with just enough tidal movement to keep water circulating.
The most consistent depths ranged from 3 to 5 feet, with bites coming right on the bottom.
Redfish stayed reliable around marsh drains and very shallow backwater areas, particularly where falling water concentrated bait.
Quiet approaches and minimal boat movement helped seal the deal in skinny water.
What’s Working
For trout, a super-slow bottom presentation was the ticket. Various jig head sizes paired with Salt & Pepper WACky Shad XL tails from Wac Attack produced the most consistent bites.
The key was patience—short hops or subtle drags, keeping the lure in contact with the bottom as long as possible.
Redfish responded well to imitation shrimp lures and FishBite tails under popping corks with a 1-foot leader.
Weightless Deadly Dudley Rat Tails also drew strikes in calm, shallow marsh water where a soft landing mattered.
Major and minor fish times played a big role this week, with the strongest bites lining up right on those windows.
