Conditions this week had fish active but spread out across East Galveston Bay. Warmer water is starting to wake things up, but consistency hasn’t quite locked in yet. Bait presence remains the key factor—if you’re not seeing life, it’s time to move

Key Zones for Action

Trout have been holding loosely over open bay structure, with no consistent grouping. We’re picking up a keeper here and there, then the bite shuts off, forcing us to stay mobile.

Redfish were better positioned along shallow grass edges and around marsh drains, especially during higher tides. Most fish were cruising skinny water, but a lot came in undersized.

Bird activity—especially pelicans and wading birds—has been a strong indicator of where bait is stacking. That’s been the best clue on where to stop and fish.

What’s Working

Imitation shrimp lures under popping corks continue to produce, especially with a short 12-inch leader to keep baits in the strike zone.

Deadly Dudley Rat Tails and Wac Attack paddle tails in lighter colors have been effective when paired with 1/8 oz jig heads.

Jerkbaits and swimbaits are still drawing reaction bites for anglers covering water.

Topwater action has been solid early and late in the day. Walking baits are getting attention during low-light windows, so it’s worth keeping one rigged and ready.

Adjust your retrieve throughout the day—slower presentations at times have made the difference.

Species Spotlight

Speckled trout are present but inconsistent, requiring patience and movement to stay on fish.

Redfish are active in the shallows, though size has been an issue this week with more undersized fish than keepers.

Seasonal Tips & Timing

As water temperatures continue to rise, expect fish to group up more and feed more aggressively. Longer days and warming trends should improve consistency heading deeper into spring.

Focus on bait activity first, then structure. If both line up, you’re in the right spot.
